Herrenknecht Tunnelling Systems is a German based company specializing in tunnel boring construction within the United States and internationally. Herrenknecht is currently constructing the expansion of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Herrenknecht located me through Google and I was chosen for the project based on my image portfolio, my past experience obtaining the necessary Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) licenses required for the work, and through another photographer referral who was familiar with my past work. The assignment was to document the construction of the tunnel while creating commercial marketing and advertising library material for future project proposals.

Working closely with the client and onsite construction workers, I was able to capture a first hand experience of the tunneling process both from inside the tunnel machinery and from above. Project planning and logistics have been the keys to success with this project. Working with multiple project managers and an international crew, obtaining all required FAA drone licenses and permission from the U.S. Navy to fly drones near the Norfolk Naval Station have been just a few of the tasks required to name a few. To date, this client is very pleased and I look forward to continuing to document this ongoing project.
