Chincoteague Pony Swim
CONTEXT
Virginia Tourism Photographer, Kyle LaFerriere was commissioned by Visit Virginia to document the 99th annual Chincoteague Pony Swim, one of the Commonwealth’s most storied and beloved traditions. The assignment celebrated nearly a century of history as the wild ponies made their iconic swim across the Assateague Channel to Chincoteague Island, drawing visitors from across the country.
APPROACH
Kyle led a team of three to capture the event from every angle, stills, video, and drone footage, creating a complete visual record of both the swim and the parade that followed. Working in close collaboration with Visit Virginia, he focused on portraying the emotion, energy, and tradition that define this legendary event.
RESULTS
The resulting collection of imagery highlights the enduring bond between the community, the ponies, and the landscape that makes Virginia’s Eastern Shore so unique. One of Kyle’s photographs from the project was selected as the cover image for the 2025 Virginia Travel Guide, a recognition that underscores the impact and storytelling power of his work.
